Change Cistern

When to change your cistern

The cistern is the tank that holds and releases the water to flush your toilet, and there are good reasons to change one:

  • The cistern is cracked and leaking
  • It constantly runs and repairs no longer hold
  • It leaks from the body or connections
  • It is very old with parts hard to source
  • You want to upgrade to a water-efficient dual-flush model
  • The flush is weak or the mechanism keeps failing

While many cistern problems are repairable, a cracked, failing or very old cistern is worth replacing, and it is a chance to cut your water use with a modern dual-flush unit.

Repair or replace the cistern?

Not every cistern problem needs a new cistern. If the issue is a worn inlet or flush valve, a running toilet, a weak flush, or slow filling, these are repairable parts, and replacing the valve is far cheaper than a new cistern, so a repair is usually the best value. Replacement is the right call when the cistern is cracked (which cannot be reliably repaired), when it is very old and parts are no longer available, or when you want to upgrade to a water-efficient model. We give you an honest assessment: if a valve repair will fix it, we will do that; if the cistern genuinely needs replacing, we will explain why and quote it.

Upgrading to dual-flush

One of the best reasons to change an old cistern is to upgrade to a modern dual-flush model, which offers separate half and full flush buttons and uses far less water than an old single-flush cistern. Older single-flush cisterns can use three times the water of a modern dual-flush per flush, so over a year the saving on your water bill is significant, as well as being better for the environment. If your toilet still has an old high-water single-flush cistern, changing to a dual-flush is a worthwhile upgrade that pays off in lower water bills. We can supply and fit a water-efficient dual-flush cistern or complete toilet to suit.

Changing just the cistern vs the whole toilet

Sometimes we can replace just the cistern and keep the existing pan, and sometimes it makes more sense to replace the whole toilet. Replacing just the cistern works when a compatible, matching cistern is available for your pan, which keeps the cost and work down. However, if your pan is old, cracked, or a style for which a matching cistern is no longer made, or if you want a fresh, modern look, replacing the whole toilet (pan and cistern together) is the better option. We assess your toilet and advise which approach suits, so you get a reliable, water-efficient result without unnecessary cost, whether that is a new cistern or a complete toilet.

The constantly running cistern

A cistern that constantly runs or keeps refilling is both annoying and wasteful, potentially wasting thousands of litres, and while it is often repairable, a cistern that keeps running despite repairs may be due for replacement. The usual cause is a worn flush valve or flapper not sealing, letting water trickle into the bowl, or a faulty inlet valve. We can often fix this by replacing the worn valve. But if the cistern is old, the mechanism is worn out, or repairs no longer hold, changing the cistern (ideally to a modern dual-flush) resolves it for good. We will diagnose whether a valve repair or a cistern change is the better fix for your situation.

Leaking cisterns

A cistern can leak from several points: internally into the bowl (a running toilet), from the connection between the cistern and pan, from the water inlet connection, or from a crack in the cistern body. Connection and valve leaks are usually repairable by replacing seals or valves. A leak from a crack in the cistern, however, means the cistern needs replacing, as cracked ceramic cannot be reliably sealed. We trace the leak to its source and advise accordingly, if it is a seal or valve, we repair it; if the cistern is cracked, we replace it. Either way, we stop the leak and the wasted water, and leave your toilet working properly.

Dual-flush mechanisms

Modern dual-flush cisterns have their own mechanisms, separate half and full flush buttons operating a flush valve, and these can wear or stick over time, causing the toilet to run, flush weakly, or not stop. When changing or repairing a dual-flush cistern, we ensure the mechanism works correctly so both the half and full flush function as they should, giving you the water savings dual-flush is designed for. We carry common dual-flush parts and know the mechanisms across the major brands. Whether you are upgrading to dual-flush or your existing dual-flush cistern is playing up, we can supply, fit or repair the mechanism so it works reliably and saves water.

How much water does a new cistern save?

Changing from an old single-flush cistern to a modern dual-flush one can noticeably cut your water use and bill. Old single-flush cisterns used a large, fixed volume every flush, while a modern dual-flush uses much less, and lets you use an even smaller half-flush when that is all that is needed. Over a year, across a household, that difference adds up to thousands of litres and real savings. On top of the efficiency, a new cistern also stops the waste from a leaking or running old one. So changing an old or faulty cistern often pays for itself over time through lower water bills, as well as giving you a reliable, modern flush.

We supply or fit your cistern

We are flexible about the cistern or toilet itself. We can supply a suitable water-efficient cistern or complete toilet to match your bathroom and pan, or fit one you have already chosen. If you want us to supply it, we will recommend a reliable, water-efficient model that suits your toilet and quote supply and install together as one simple job. Buying a quality cistern or toilet matters for reliability and parts availability down the track. Whichever way you prefer, we fit it correctly, connect the water, and test it leak-free with a proper flush, so you are left with a reliable, water-saving toilet.

Our cistern change process

Changing a cistern is usually a straightforward job. We turn off the water to the toilet, drain and remove the old cistern, fit the new one (checking the connection to the pan and the water inlet), connect it, and test the flush and all the seals for leaks. If we are replacing the whole toilet, we also remove the old pan, fit and seal the new one, and test it. We leave everything clean and working, and take the old unit away. The whole job is typically completed in a single visit, so you have a reliable, water-efficient toilet without a long wait or mess.

How much does it cost?

The cost of changing a cistern depends on whether we are replacing just the cistern or the whole toilet, the model chosen, and whether you supply it or we do. Replacing just the cistern on a sound pan is cheaper than a full toilet replacement. We give you an upfront fixed price before we start, including supply if we are providing the cistern or toilet, so you know the cost. Because a new dual-flush cistern saves water, and stops the waste from a leaking or running old one, the change often pays off over time, as well as giving you a reliable flush.

Change cistern FAQs

When should I replace my toilet cistern?

Replace it when the cistern is cracked, constantly running despite repairs, leaking, or very old, or when you want to upgrade to a water-efficient dual-flush model.

Can you just replace the cistern, not the whole toilet?

Often yes, if a matching cistern is available for your pan. Otherwise replacing the whole toilet may be necessary, and we will advise.

Should I repair or replace the cistern?

If only an internal valve is worn, a repair is usually best value. If the cistern is cracked or very old, replacement makes more sense.

Will a new cistern save water?

Yes. A modern dual-flush cistern uses far less water than an old single-flush one, reducing your water bill.

My cistern keeps running, do I need a new one?

Not necessarily, a constantly running cistern is often a worn flush or inlet valve, which we can replace. If the cistern is cracked or old, replacement may be better.

How much does it cost to change a cistern?

It depends on the cistern and the job. We give you an upfront fixed price before we start.

Can you supply the new cistern?

Yes. We can supply and install a suitable cistern or complete toilet, or fit one you have chosen.

Do you service my area?

Yes, we change cisterns across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, with same-day service where we can.

What our customers say?

Excellent and friendly
Jordan is an amazing person he did an excellent job for my hot water service. The taps were leaking and he fixed the leaking taps. His service was very good.
Very pleased with the service I received by Dom, Diego and Jordan. Communication was excellent. The job was done extremely fast (same day as the quote was done), and the ceiling fans that were being installed look fantastic. I was especially impressed with Dom, who when faced with a obstacle during the install, he came up with a solution which allowed the job to go ahead. Highly recommend.
We really appreciate the professional, courteous and friendly service. Thankyou
Had Jordan Smith out he was very helpful
Dominic was quick, efficient & pleasant to deal with. No problems at all.
Really happy with the work Diego did replacing our induction cooktop, I would highly recommend his services.
We received excellent service and advice
Diego did a fantastic job, very quick and everything works - thanks!
Jordan Smith came out to quote on several jobs for me: replacing the pipes in my shower, fixing a leaking toilet, and installing an air conditioner. He was patient, thorough and took real time to explain everything, and I never felt rushed. The quote was clear and fair, and I felt genuinely looked after. You can tell he takes pride in his work and cares about his customers. I can't recommend Jordan and the team highly enough! Coda rewired my electrics and Kosta installed my air conditioning units, and both were fantastic. They were professional and efficient, explained what they were doing as they went, and gave me some great tips and insight along the way. Highly recommend them both!
