Common toilet problems we fix

A broken toilet is more than an inconvenience, especially if it is the only one in the home, so we fix the full range of toilet problems promptly:

  • A toilet that will not flush or flushes weakly
  • A constantly running toilet
  • A leaking toilet, at the base, cistern or connections
  • A blocked toilet that will not clear
  • A cracked pan or cistern
  • A loose or rocking toilet
  • A faulty cistern, with button, valve or fill problems

Whatever the fault, we diagnose the cause and repair it, or replace the toilet if it is cracked or beyond economical repair, with an upfront price.

Toilet will not flush

A toilet that will not flush, or flushes weakly, is usually a cistern problem rather than a blockage. Common causes are a broken or disconnected flush button or lever, a worn flush valve (the outlet valve at the bottom of the cistern) that is not releasing water properly, a cistern not filling due to a faulty inlet valve, or the water level set too low. If the bowl fills but will not clear, a partial blockage may be the cause instead. We diagnose whether it is the button, the flush valve, the fill valve or a blockage, and repair the right part, so your toilet flushes properly again with a full, strong flush.

The constantly running toilet

A toilet that runs constantly, or keeps refilling, wastes a surprising amount of water, potentially thousands of litres and a noticeable amount on your water bill, so it is worth fixing promptly even though it still works. The usual cause is a worn flush valve or flapper that is not sealing, letting water leak from the cistern into the bowl so the cistern keeps refilling, or a faulty inlet valve that will not shut off, or a water level set too high so it runs into the overflow. These are repairable cistern parts. We identify which valve is at fault and replace it, stopping the constant running and the wasted water.

Leaking toilets

A leaking toilet can leak from several places, and where it leaks tells us what is wrong. A leak at the base can be a failed seal (wax or rubber) between the pan and the floor drain, which also lets smells out, or a cracked pan. A leak from the cistern or between the cistern and pan points to worn seals or connections. A leak at the water connection is usually a worn washer or fitting. A leak at the base in particular should be dealt with promptly, as water escaping there can damage the floor. We trace the leak to its source and fix it, resealing, replacing a part, or replacing the toilet if it is cracked.

Cracked toilet pan or cistern

A crack in the toilet pan or cistern is bad news, because unlike a worn washer or valve, a cracked ceramic cannot be reliably repaired and usually means the toilet needs replacing. Cracks can develop from age, impact, over-tightening, or stress, and they leak, sometimes slowly and invisibly at first, then worse over time, and a cracked pan can eventually fail more dramatically. If you have found a crack, or have a persistent leak with no obvious loose fitting, the ceramic may be the cause. We can confirm whether a crack is behind the problem and replace the toilet, often the same day, so you are not left with a leaking or unusable toilet.

Blocked toilets

A blocked toilet is one of the most common toilet problems, usually caused by flushing something that should not go down, wipes, sanitary products or too much paper, or a blockage further down the drain. If plunging with a flanged plunger does not clear it, the blockage is deeper and needs a plumber with the right equipment. We clear blocked toilets with a closet auger, drain machine or high-pressure jetter, and if it keeps blocking, inspect the drain with a camera to find the cause, such as tree roots. See our dedicated blocked toilet service for more, we clear them fast so your toilet works again.

Faulty cistern and flush mechanisms

The cistern holds all the working parts of a toilet, the inlet (fill) valve, the flush (outlet) valve, and the button or lever, and most non-blockage toilet problems come down to one of these wearing out. A faulty inlet valve causes running or slow filling; a worn flush valve causes weak flushing or constant running; a broken button or lever stops it flushing at all. These are all repairable parts, and replacing the worn component restores normal operation far more cheaply than a new toilet. We carry common cistern parts, so we can often repair a faulty cistern on the spot, fixing running, weak flushing or flush-button problems in a single visit.

Loose or rocking toilets

A toilet that rocks or is loose on the floor is not just annoying, it can break the seal between the pan and the drain, leading to leaks and smells, and over time the movement can crack the pan or damage the floor. The cause is usually loose or corroded floor fixings, a failed seal, or an uneven floor. We re-secure the toilet properly, replace the seal if needed, and make sure it is stable and leak-free. Fixing a rocking toilet promptly prevents the bigger problems, leaks, smells and cracks, that develop if the movement is left, so it is worth sorting before it causes damage.

Repair or replace your toilet?

Whether to repair or replace depends on the problem. Most toilet faults, running, weak flushing, leaking seals, faulty cistern parts, loose fixings, are repairable, and fixing the worn part is usually the best value. Replacement is needed when the ceramic is cracked, when the toilet is very old and parts are hard to get, or when you simply want to update to a modern, water-efficient dual-flush model. We give you an honest assessment: if a repair genuinely fixes it, we will do that rather than push a new toilet; if the pan is cracked or replacement is the better long-term value, we will explain why and can often install a new one the same day.

Installing a new toilet

If your toilet is cracked, very old, or you want to upgrade, we supply and install new toilets, including modern water-efficient dual-flush models that cut your water use. We remove and dispose of the old toilet, install the new pan and cistern, connect the water and waste, fit the seal, and test that it flushes properly and does not leak. A modern dual-flush toilet uses far less water than an old single-flush model, saving on your water bill. Whether you have had a toilet fail or are renovating a bathroom, we handle the whole replacement, and can often do it the same day, so you are not left without a working toilet.

How much does toilet repair cost?

Toilet repairs are generally affordable, especially common fixes like replacing a cistern valve, resealing a connection, re-securing a loose toilet, or fixing a flush button. The cost depends on the fault and the parts needed. A repair is almost always cheaper than a new toilet, unless the pan or cistern is cracked, in which case replacement is the better value. Installing a new toilet depends on the model chosen. We carry common parts so many repairs are done on the spot, and we give you an upfront fixed price before we start, so you know whether a repair or replacement is the smarter spend.

Same-day toilet repairs

A broken toilet is urgent, especially if it is the only one in the house, so we treat it as a priority. Our phones are answered 24 hours a day, and we can usually get a licensed plumber to you the same day across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. We carry common cistern parts and seals, so many repairs are done in a single visit, and where a replacement is needed we can often supply and install a new toilet the same day. We will diagnose the fault, give you an upfront price for the repair or replacement, and get your toilet working properly again fast.

Licensed, guaranteed plumbers

Toilet repairs and replacements are best done by a licensed plumber who will fix the real cause, whether it is a cistern valve, a seal, a blockage or a cracked pan, and leave it working and leak-free, rather than a temporary fix that fails again. Our team is fully licensed and insured, we repair running, leaking, blocked and faulty toilets, re-secure loose ones, and install new water-efficient models, and we back our work. You get upfront fixed pricing, same-day service where we can, tidy work and a properly working toilet. For a plumber near you for a broken toilet, we cover Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

Broken toilet FAQs

Why will my toilet not flush?

Common causes are a worn flush valve or flapper, a faulty fill valve, or a blockage. Most are quick, affordable repairs.

Why does my toilet keep running?

A running toilet is usually a worn flush or fill valve in the cistern. It wastes water and is a simple fix.

Should I repair or replace my toilet?

Most faults are repaired by replacing a part. If the pan or cistern is cracked or the toilet is very old, replacement is often better value.

How much does it cost to fix a broken toilet?

A part or seal repair is affordable; a full replacement costs more. We give you an upfront fixed price for either.

Can you fix a cracked toilet?

A cracked pan or cistern cannot be reliably repaired and should be replaced. We can supply and fit a new toilet.

My toilet is wobbly, is that a problem?

Yes. A loose toilet can break the floor seal and leak at the base. We re-secure it and replace the seal if needed.

Can you repair a toilet the same day?

Yes, in most cases. We carry common parts and can usually repair or replace a toilet the same day across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

Do you offer emergency toilet repairs?

Yes. If it is your only toilet or it is leaking badly, we answer calls around the clock and prioritise it.

What our customers say?

Jackson & Tristan were excellent and honest in communicating their assessment of the issue.
John did a fantastic job thankyou. Tracy Gordon
Connor was very helpful, prompt & great advice.
Matt was very friendly & approachable & his workmanship is top shelf. I would recommend Matt to anyone needing any plumbing work done around their home or business. Yours sincerely, Philip Munro.
Yesterday we had a blow out on our electric meter box and we contacted Same Day Trades for assistance as we had lost all power to the house. They were on sites within 4 hours and Jess gave us the bad news. We would need a complete rebuild on the meter box. He gave us a quote that nearly blue us away, however when he explained that all components were top quality and as it was late in the afternoon he would get us temporarily back on line that evening and tomorrow the boys would install a brand new switch board. Cameron and Jordan were on the job at 7.30am and laboured most of the day with the installation. They overcame a few obstacles successfully and completed the job to our satisfaction. Overall a job well done.
Had Cameron here for a RCD issue. He was great, explained everuthing got the whole job done that day! Thanks Cam. Great job thank you.
Coda I can’t thank him enough for everything he did with my power today! Can’t rate him high enough. Changing a power board to new. Smart, reliable, caring
Jordan was quick, efficient and communicated really effectively about our plumbing issues today. Not only that, but he bonded with our elderly dog. 🥰 Unfortunately, we do have to have further work because of the age of the pipes, but the quotes were very reasonable. Same Day Trades did come out on the same day and Jordan did a great job.
Very professional knows what needs to be done and sealed the wall where they had to drill a hole. I'd highly recommend them.
It is rare to find a tradie that goes above and beyond, thanks Dom C for an outstanding job
