A leaking basin wastes water and, if it leaks under the vanity, can rot the cabinet and floor and cause mould, so it is worth fixing promptly. Our licensed plumbers find the exact source, the tap, the waste and trap, the connections, or a cracked basin, and fix it leak-free, carrying common parts so most leaks are sorted on the spot. If the basin is cracked or you want to upgrade the tap, we can replace them too. We fix leaking basins across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, with same-day service where we can and an upfront fixed price.

Basin Leaking

Why your basin is leaking

A leaking basin is a common problem and usually a straightforward fix once the source is found. Basins can leak from several points: the tap, the waste and trap below, the water supply connections, or a crack in the basin itself. The leak might show as a drip from the tap, water pooling on the vanity top, or, most commonly, water collecting in the cabinet under the basin. Each source is fixed differently, so finding exactly where the water is escaping is the first step. Most basin leaks are repairable and affordable, and fixing them promptly prevents water damage to the vanity and floor. We fix leaking basins across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

Where basins leak from

Pinpointing the source tells us what to fix:

  • The tap, a worn washer or cartridge causing a drip or a leak at the base
  • The waste and trap under the basin, worn seals or loose connections
  • The water supply connections and flexible hoses
  • The basin itself, a crack in the ceramic
  • The seal between the basin and the vanity or wall

A leak you see on top usually points to the tap or basin, while water in the cabinet below points to the trap, waste or supply connections. We trace it to the exact source and fix it properly.

Leaks under the vanity

The most common basin leak is water collecting in the cabinet under the basin, which points to the plumbing below, the waste and trap, or the water supply connections. The trap can leak from worn seals or loose connections, the waste fitting where it joins the basin can leak if its seal has failed, and the flexible supply hoses or their connections can weep or drip. Because this leak is hidden inside the cabinet, it often goes unnoticed until the vanity base swells or smells, by which point there may be damage. We identify which connection is leaking and repair or reseal it, stopping the leak before it ruins the vanity.

Leaking basin taps

If the leak is a drip from the tap, or water around the base of the tap, the cause is usually a worn washer (in a traditional tap) or a worn ceramic cartridge (in a mixer tap), or a worn O-ring at the base. These are common, repairable faults, and replacing the worn part restores the tap to good order and stops the drip and the wasted water. We carry common washers, cartridges and O-rings, so most leaking basin taps are repaired on the spot. If the tap is old or corroded, we can replace it instead, and we will advise which is the better value. See our leaking taps service for more.

The waste and P-trap

Under the basin is the waste outlet and the P-trap, the U-shaped pipe that holds water to block sewer gases. Leaks here are common: the seal where the waste joins the basin can fail, the trap connections can loosen or their seals perish, and the trap itself can crack. A leaking or loose trap drips into the cabinet below. We check and reseal the waste and trap, tighten or replace connections, and make sure everything is watertight. Often a leaking trap is simply a worn seal or a connection that has worked loose, which is a quick fix. We also ensure the trap is correctly fitted so it seals against smells as well as leaks.

Supply connections and flexi hoses

The flexible hoses that supply water to the basin tap, and their connections, are another common source of under-basin leaks, and they deserve attention because a failed flexi hose can go from a weep to a burst, releasing water fast. Over time the hoses and their connections can corrode, perish or loosen, causing drips or, in the worst case, a sudden failure and flood. We check the supply connections and hoses, tighten or reseal leaking connections, and replace old or perished flexi hoses, which is cheap insurance against a burst. If your basin leak is at the supply side, we fix it and, if the hoses are old, recommend replacing them before they fail.

A cracked basin

Sometimes the leak comes from a crack in the basin itself, which, unlike a worn washer or seal, cannot be reliably repaired, cracked ceramic will keep leaking and can worsen. Cracks develop from impact, stress, or age, and a hairline crack can be hard to spot but still leak steadily. If you have a persistent leak with no loose fitting or worn seal to blame, the basin may be cracked. We can confirm whether a crack is the cause and, if so, replace the basin, supplying and installing a new one, often the same day. Replacing a cracked basin also freshens up the vanity and is a chance to update the tap.

The damage a leaking basin causes

A basin leak, especially one hidden in the cabinet below, can cause real damage if left. Water pooling in the vanity swells and rots the cabinet base, damages the floor beneath, and creates the damp, dark conditions that breed mould, which is both unsightly and a health concern. A leak at the supply side can be worse if a hose bursts. Because under-basin leaks are often unnoticed until the damage shows, a small, cheap-to-fix leak can turn into a ruined vanity and a mould problem. This is why it is worth fixing a basin leak promptly, and checking under the basin periodically for any sign of moisture.

Repair or replace?

Most basin leaks are repairable and that is the best value, replacing a worn tap washer or cartridge, resealing the waste or trap, tightening or replacing a connection or flexi hose. Replacement comes in only when the basin itself is cracked, the tap is old and corroded, or you want to update the vanity. We will give you an honest assessment: if a simple seal or washer repair will fix it, we will do that rather than suggest replacing fittings unnecessarily; if the basin is cracked or the tapware is past its best, we will explain the options and quote the replacement. Either way, we leave your basin leak-free and working properly.

Fixing everything at once

While we are fixing your leaking basin, we can sort out any related issues at the same time, which is more efficient than separate visits. If the tap is leaking too, we can repair or replace it; if the flexi hoses are old, we can renew them as cheap insurance against a future burst; and if other taps or fixtures in the bathroom are leaking, we can attend to those as well. Getting it all done in one visit saves you time and call-out costs. Just let us know what else needs attention when you book, and we will come prepared to leave your bathroom plumbing leak-free and in good order.

How much does it cost?

Fixing a leaking basin is usually an affordable job, especially common repairs like a tap washer or cartridge, resealing the waste or trap, or replacing a flexi hose. The cost depends on the source of the leak and the parts needed, with a cracked basin needing replacement being the larger job. We carry common parts so many basin leaks are fixed on the spot in a single visit, and we give you an upfront fixed price before we start, so you know the cost. Because a small leak can cause expensive vanity and floor damage if ignored, fixing it promptly is money well spent.

Same-day plumbing service

A leaking basin, especially one wetting the cabinet below, is worth fixing promptly before it damages the vanity, so there is no need to wait. We offer fast service and same-day appointments where we can across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, and we carry common parts so most basin leaks are fixed in a single visit. Our phones are answered around the clock. Whether it is a dripping tap, a leaking trap, a weeping supply connection, or a cracked basin, we will find the source and fix it, with an upfront price, leaving your basin leak-free and your vanity protected from water damage.

Licensed, guaranteed plumbers

Fixing a leaking basin is best done by a licensed plumber who will find the real source, whether the tap, waste, trap, connections or basin, and fix it leak-free, rather than a temporary fix that drips again. Our team is fully licensed and insured, we repair and reseal taps, wastes, traps and connections, replace old flexi hoses and cracked basins, and back our work. You get upfront fixed pricing, tidy work, and a basin that is leak-free with your vanity protected. For a plumber near you for a leaking basin, we cover Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
