What is a safety switch?
A safety switch, also called an RCD (residual current device), is a life-saving device in your switchboard that monitors the flow of electricity through a circuit. If it detects even a tiny imbalance, meaning electricity is leaking to earth, such as through a person touching a live part or a faulty appliance, it cuts the power in as little as 0.03 of a second. That speed is fast enough to prevent a fatal electric shock. Safety switches are different from circuit breakers and fuses, which protect the wiring from overload and short circuits but do not protect people from shock. A properly protected home needs both.
Safety switch vs circuit breaker vs fuse
These three devices are often confused, but they do different jobs:
- Fuses are the oldest, found in ceramic form in older boards; they blow on overload and must be rewired by hand, and they do not protect against shock
- Circuit breakers trip automatically on overload or short circuit to protect the wiring, and simply reset; they also do not protect against shock
- Safety switches (RCDs) detect electricity leaking to earth and cut power in a fraction of a second to protect people from fatal shock

Why every home needs safety switches
Electric shock kills, and most electrocutions in the home could have been prevented by a working safety switch. A faulty appliance, a damaged cord, water reaching an electrical part, or simply drilling into a hidden cable can all make something live, and without a safety switch there is nothing to stop the current flowing through a person. A circuit breaker or fuse will not react fast enough, or at all, to protect you from that. A safety switch is the single most important electrical safety device in your home, and it is why they are now required by law on an increasing number of circuits.
Are safety switches a legal requirement?
Safety switch requirements have tightened over the years, and the rules vary by state and by the type of property and work being done. In general, safety switches are required on power and lighting circuits in new homes, when you do electrical work or add circuits, and increasingly in rental properties, where landlords have obligations to protect tenants. When selling or renting, you may be required to have compliant safety switches installed. Rather than navigate the detail yourself, we can inspect your board, tell you what your property requires, and bring it up to standard. Even where not strictly required, adding safety switches is always worthwhile.
Signs your safety switch has a problem
Your safety switch should trip only when there is a genuine fault, so watch for these signs something is wrong:
- It trips repeatedly or trips as soon as you reset it
- It will not reset at all
- It never trips, even when you press the test button
- You have no safety switch on some or all circuits
- The switch is old or damaged
A switch that trips often is usually doing its job, protecting you from a real fault that needs finding. A switch that will not trip when tested has failed and is no longer protecting you. Either way, it needs a licensed electrician.
Why your safety switch keeps tripping
A safety switch that keeps tripping is almost always detecting a genuine earth leakage fault, not malfunctioning, so resetting it over and over is not the answer. Common causes are a faulty appliance leaking current, a damaged cord or plug, moisture in an outlet or fitting, or deteriorating wiring. Sometimes the fault is intermittent, which makes it trickier to find. Our approach is to isolate circuits and appliances methodically to identify exactly what is causing the leakage, then fix it, whether that is a faulty appliance, a damaged cable or a wiring issue. That way the tripping stops because the fault is gone, not because the protection has been bypassed.
Testing your safety switch
Safety switches have a test button for a reason, and you should use it. We recommend pressing the test button on each safety switch every three months; a working switch will trip and cut the power to its circuits, which you then reset. If pressing the test button does nothing, the safety switch has failed and is no longer protecting you, and it should be replaced by a licensed electrician straight away. This simple quarterly check is the best way to know your protection is actually working, since a failed safety switch gives no outward sign that it has stopped doing its job.
Installing safety switches
If your home has no safety switches, or only some circuits are protected, we can install them at your switchboard. The ideal is to have every power and lighting circuit protected, so that whatever goes wrong and wherever, you are covered. Depending on your existing board, this may be a straightforward addition, or it may be best combined with a switchboard upgrade if the board is old, full, or still using ceramic fuses. How many safety switches do you need?
Older homes often had just one safety switch covering several circuits, which has a downside: when it trips, everything on those circuits goes off at once, and it can be harder to tell which circuit caused it. Modern best practice is to have safety switch protection on each circuit, or combined RCBO devices that provide both overload and shock protection per circuit. This means a fault on one circuit only cuts that circuit, leaving the rest of your home powered, and makes faults far easier to pinpoint. We will advise how many you need for full, practical protection based on how your board is laid out.
Safety switches for renovations and additions
Any time you renovate, add circuits, or install new electrical equipment, it is the ideal moment to bring your safety switch protection up to standard, and often it is required. Adding a new circuit can trigger a requirement to fit a safety switch, and work like a kitchen or bathroom renovation, a new air conditioner, solar, or an EV charger all benefit from, or need, RCD protection. Mention any planned work when you book, and we will make sure the new circuits are properly protected and that we take the opportunity to protect existing circuits too, so the whole home is safer when the job is done.

What is the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?
A circuit breaker protects your wiring from overload and fire. A safety switch protects people from electric shock by cutting power the instant it detects a leak to earth. You need both.
Are safety switches required by law?
