Why is my ceiling fan wobbling?
A wobble is the most common complaint, and it is usually a balance or mounting problem rather than a dangerous fault, loose blades or screws, dust built up unevenly on the blades, bent blades, or a mounting bracket that has worked loose. A slight wobble is harmless, but a bad one should not be ignored, because over time the movement can loosen the mounting further and, in the worst case, the fan can become unsafe. Cleaning the blades, tightening all the fixings and balancing the fan usually solves it; if the mounting itself has loosened, it needs re-securing properly to a ceiling joist or a rated mounting bracket.
Noisy fans and fans that will not start
Humming or buzzing often points to a worn motor or a failing capacitor, or a speed controller or dimmer that is not compatible with the fan. Clicking or rattling is usually loose blades or screws. A fan that will not start at all, or runs slowly or is stuck on one speed, is very commonly a failed capacitor, an inexpensive, repairable component that helps the motor start and controls the speeds. Grinding noises, on the other hand, can mean worn motor bearings, which usually means the fan is near the end of its life. Repair or replace your fan?
Most fan faults are repairable, replacing a capacitor, a controller or a light module, or re-securing and balancing a wobbling fan, and fixing the part is almost always far cheaper than a new fan.
