Installing a hot water system is more than connecting a tank, it involves water, and often gas or electrical connections, safety valves and strict compliance requirements, which is why it must be done by a licensed plumber, and a licensed gas fitter where gas is involved. Electric and gas installation

Electric systems are the simplest to install, needing only a power connection, and work anywhere, which makes them a quick, affordable choice or like-for-like replacement. Many run on an off-peak tariff to reduce running costs. Gas systems cost less to run where you have a gas connection, and come as storage, which keeps a tank ready, or continuous flow, which heats water on demand so you never run out and saves space. Gas installation must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter, which we are. We will advise whether electric or gas, and which configuration, best suits your home and usage.

Heat pump and solar installation

Heat pump systems draw heat from the air to warm your water, using up to 70% less energy than standard electric, and they are usually eligible for government rebates that offset much of the higher purchase price. They suit most homes and do not need roof space. Solar hot water uses roof collectors with an electric or gas booster, giving the lowest running costs of all and attracting rebates, though it needs suitable roof space. Both involve more planning than a simple electric swap, and we handle the assessment, installation and rebate paperwork, so you get an efficient system installed correctly and the discount you are entitled to.

Choosing the right size

Getting the size right means you never run out of hot water and never pay to heat water you do not use. As a rough guide, a 1 to 2 person home suits a 125 to 170 litre storage tank, a 3 to 4 person home suits 250 to 315 litres, and a 5 or more person home suits 315 litres or more. Continuous flow units are sized by flow rate, based on how many outlets run at once. Peak demand matters too, so a home where several showers run back to back needs more capacity. We confirm the right size on site before you buy, so your new system fits how you actually live.

Replacing an existing system

Most installations are replacements of an old or failed system, and we make it straightforward. We assess whether a like-for-like replacement is best or whether it is worth switching to a more efficient type, drain and safely disconnect the old unit, install and connect the new system, fit the required valves, and commission and test it. We take the old unit away and clean up. If you are moving from one fuel type to another, for example electric to gas or to a heat pump, there may be additional connection work, which we will explain and quote upfront. Either way, you are left with hot water and no mess.

Changing system type or fuel

Installation is the ideal time to consider switching to a cheaper-to-run system. Moving from electric to gas, or to a heat pump or solar, can significantly cut your running costs and may qualify for rebates. Changing fuel type involves extra work, running a gas line for a new gas system, upgrading electrical supply for some heat pumps, or installing roof collectors for solar, so it costs more up front than a like-for-like swap, but the long-term savings often justify it. We will lay out the options, the upfront cost and the running-cost savings honestly, so you can decide whether to stick with the same type or upgrade.

Tempering valves and safety

Every new hot water installation must include a compliant tempering valve, which blends hot and cold to deliver water to your bathroom at a safe 50 degrees, preventing scalding, especially important for children and the elderly. It is a legal requirement. We also fit the pressure and temperature relief valves that let the system operate safely. These safety components are a key reason installation must be done by a licensed professional, incorrect valves or none at all make a system unsafe and non-compliant.
