Why has my light stopped working?

When a light or group of lights stops working, the cause could be the globe, the fitting, the switch, or the circuit. Before calling, it is worth checking whether the globe has simply blown, whether other lights on the same circuit are also out, and whether a breaker or safety switch has tripped at the switchboard. If a single light is out, it is often the globe or fitting; if a whole group is dead, or a breaker keeps tripping, there is a circuit or wiring fault. Why are my lights flickering?

Flickering lights range from harmless to a sign of a real problem. A single flickering globe is often just a loose or failing globe, or, with an LED, a mismatched dimmer. But if multiple lights flicker, lights dim when an appliance switches on, or flickering is widespread, it can indicate a loose wiring connection, an overloaded circuit, or a problem at the switchboard, all of which warrant professional attention because loose connections can arc and are a fire risk. Lights that keep blowing globes

If a particular light fitting keeps blowing globes unusually often, something is wrong beyond bad luck. Common causes include a voltage problem, a loose or poor connection in the fitting or wiring that stresses the globe, excessive vibration (for example near a door or under a floor that flexes), using the wrong type or wattage of globe, or a faulty fixture. Buzzing and humming lights

Downlights that have stopped working

A downlight that has gone dark is a common fault, and often the whole fitting is not dead, just the driver. LED downlights have a small driver (transformer) that powers the LED, and when the driver fails, the light stops working even though the LED itself may be fine. Replacing the driver, or the fitting where needed, restores it, usually far cheaper than it might seem. A flickering or intermittently working downlight can also be a driver or connection issue. We diagnose whether it is the driver, the LED module, a connection or the dimmer, and repair it, so your downlights work reliably again without you having to replace a whole run.

Flickering when appliances turn on

If your lights dim or flicker whenever a large appliance starts, an air conditioner, oven, pump or washing machine, it is worth investigating. A slight, brief dim can be normal as a heavy appliance draws a surge of current, but noticeable or frequent flickering can indicate an overloaded circuit, an undersized or ageing supply, loose connections, or a switchboard that needs attention.
