What is a switchboard and what does it do?
Your switchboard, sometimes called the fuse box or electrical panel, is the central hub of your home electrical system. It takes the main power supply coming into your home and distributes it safely to the individual circuits that run your lights, power points, oven, air conditioning and hot water. Just as importantly, the switchboard is where your home safety devices live. Circuit breakers cut power to a circuit if it is overloaded or short-circuits, and safety switches (RCDs) cut power in a fraction of a second if they detect electricity leaking to earth, which is what protects you from a fatal shock. When the switchboard is old or poorly set up, the whole home is left underprotected, which is why keeping it modern and compliant matters so much.
Signs you need a switchboard upgrade
Switchboards do not last forever, and an old one often cannot cope with the demands of a modern home. It is time to consider an upgrade if you notice any of these:

The dangers of old ceramic fuses
Many older Australian homes still have a switchboard fitted with rewirable ceramic fuses, and they are a genuine safety risk. Unlike a circuit breaker, a ceramic fuse does not trip, it physically blows, and someone then has to rewire it by hand, often while the power is still live. They react far more slowly than modern breakers, offering much less protection against electrical faults and fires. Critically, a fuse box usually has no safety switches, so there is nothing protecting the people in the home from electric shock.
