Meter Box Upgrade

What is a meter box and what does it do?

Your meter box is the enclosure, usually mounted on an external wall, that houses your electricity meter, the main switch, and often your switchboard with its circuit breakers and safety switches. It is the point where the power supply from the street enters and is distributed through your home, and it protects those vital components from weather and tampering. Because everything electrical in your home passes through here, the condition of your meter box matters for both safety and reliability. An old, damaged or overcrowded meter box can be a fire risk and can prevent you adding modern equipment like solar, so keeping it sound and up to date is important.

Signs you need a meter box upgrade

Meter boxes do not last forever, and several signs point to an upgrade being due:

  • A cracked, broken or warped box, or a door that will not close
  • Rust, corrosion or water getting inside
  • Ceramic fuses or a very old switchboard inside
  • No safety switches protecting your circuits
  • A burning smell, scorch marks or buzzing from the box
  • No room to add circuits for solar, air conditioning or an EV charger
  • Exposed wiring or an asbestos backing panel in older boxes

Several of these, especially a burning smell or exposed wiring, should be treated as urgent and checked by a licensed electrician.

The dangers of an old meter box

An old or damaged meter box is a genuine safety hazard. Cracks and a failed door let in water and weather, which combined with electricity is dangerous and can cause corrosion and faults. Old boxes often contain ceramic fuses and no safety switches, leaving the home underprotected against both electrical fires and electric shock. Many older meter boxes also have a backing panel made of asbestos, which is hazardous if disturbed and must be handled correctly. Exposed or deteriorating wiring inside the box adds to the risk. Upgrading an old meter box removes these hazards and brings the most important part of your electrical system up to a safe, modern standard.

Asbestos in older meter boxes

Many meter boxes installed before the 1990s have a backing board made from asbestos cement, which is safe while undisturbed but hazardous if drilled, cut or broken, releasing fibres that are dangerous to breathe. This is a key reason meter box work in older homes should only be done by professionals who know how to identify and handle it safely and legally. If your meter box upgrade involves an asbestos backing panel, it must be removed and disposed of correctly under the relevant regulations. We identify asbestos backing, take the proper precautions, and arrange safe removal and disposal as part of the upgrade, so the job is done safely and compliantly.

When is a meter box upgrade required?

Sometimes an upgrade is a choice for safety, and sometimes it is effectively required. You will usually need one when installing solar, a battery or an EV charger, which need spare capacity, modern metering and safety switches; when renovating or adding circuits, which can trigger a requirement to bring the box up to standard; when the box is damaged or unsafe; or when your energy retailer or network requires it, for example to fit a new digital meter. If your box still has ceramic fuses and no safety switches, any significant electrical work is a good opportunity to upgrade. We will tell you honestly whether your project requires an upgrade.

Meter box upgrades for solar and EV chargers

Adding solar panels, a home battery or an EV charger puts new demands on your meter box and switchboard, and older boxes often cannot accommodate them safely. These installations typically need spare capacity, dedicated circuits, modern safety switches and sometimes a new digital or bi-directional meter. Your solar installer or EV charger installer will usually require a compliant meter box and switchboard before connecting. We future-proof your meter box as part of the upgrade, making room for the circuits and metering you need now and later, so you are ready for solar, battery storage and EV charging without a second round of work. Mention your plans when you book.

Meter box vs switchboard upgrade

These two jobs are related and often done together, but they are not the same thing. The meter box is the external enclosure housing the meter, main switch and switchboard; the switchboard is the panel of circuit breakers and safety switches inside it. Sometimes only the switchboard needs upgrading, for example to replace ceramic fuses and add safety switches, while the box itself is sound. Other times the box is cracked, rusted or has an asbestos panel and needs replacing too. We assess both and recommend what your situation actually needs, whether that is a switchboard upgrade, a new meter box, or both, with an upfront price.

What a modern meter box includes

A properly upgraded meter box brings your home up to current standards and typically includes a weatherproof, compliant enclosure; your electricity meter (or provision for a new digital meter if the retailer is fitting one); a main switch; and a modern switchboard inside with circuit breakers and safety switches on the required circuits. It will have clear circuit labelling, tidy and correctly rated wiring, and adequate spare capacity for future circuits like solar or an EV charger. The result is a safe, compliant and reliable hub for your home electrical system, built to handle modern household loads rather than the much lighter demands of decades ago.

Our meter box upgrade process

We keep the job organised and safe:

  1. Assessment and quote, we inspect your meter box, switchboard and supply, identify any asbestos, and give you an upfront fixed price
  2. Coordination, we arrange any supply disconnection with the network and schedule the work to minimise disruption
  3. Removal, we safely remove the old box and components, handling any asbestos correctly
  4. Installation, we fit the new box, switchboard, breakers and safety switches
  5. Testing and handover, we test every circuit, label them, and issue your certificate of compliance

How long does a meter box upgrade take?

Most residential meter box upgrades are completed in a day, with the power off only while we work on the box and switchboard itself. We plan the job to keep that disruption as short as practical. More involved jobs, such as those requiring asbestos removal, a supply upgrade, relocating the box, or coordinating a network disconnection and reconnection, can take longer or need scheduling around the network provider. We will give you a clear timeframe and explain any coordination needed when we quote, so you can plan around the work and know what to expect on the day.

How much does a meter box upgrade cost?

The cost depends on the size and condition of your existing box, whether the switchboard inside also needs upgrading, whether there is an asbestos backing panel to remove, how many circuits need safety switch protection, and whether any supply or metering coordination is required. Asbestos removal and network coordination add to a straightforward swap. Rather than give a vague range, we inspect your setup and provide an upfront fixed price before any work starts, including the certificate of compliance. If combining the meter box and switchboard upgrade saves you money overall, we will lay that out clearly.

Weatherproofing and location

Because meter boxes are usually mounted outside, weatherproofing is essential, a cracked box or failed seal lets in rain that corrodes components and creates a fault and shock risk. A new box is properly sealed and weather-rated for its position. Occasionally a meter box is in a poor or non-compliant location, or you may want it relocated during a renovation. Relocating a meter box is a bigger job that involves the network provider, but it is possible, and we can advise whether it is necessary or worthwhile. Wherever your box sits, we make sure the new installation is weatherproof, accessible and compliant.

Same-day electrical service

If your meter box is damaged, letting in water, showing scorch marks or giving off a burning smell, do not wait, these are signs of a real hazard. We offer fast service and same-day attendance where we can across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, and our phones are answered around the clock. For an urgent safety concern we will get a licensed electrician to you to make it safe, and then quote any upgrade work needed. For planned upgrades, such as preparing for solar or an EV charger, we will book a time that suits and give you an upfront price.

Licensed, compliant and guaranteed

Meter box work involves your main electrical supply and often asbestos, so it is strictly licensed work and never a DIY job. Our licensed electricians upgrade meter boxes and switchboards to the current AS/NZS 3000 standard, handle any asbestos safely and legally, install safety switches, coordinate with the network where needed, and issue a certificate of compliance on completion. You get honest advice, upfront fixed pricing, tidy work and a guarantee you can rely on. We upgrade meter boxes across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, ready for solar, EV charging and modern household demands.

Meter box upgrade FAQs

How do I know if my meter box needs upgrading?

Signs include ceramic fuses, no safety switches, frequent tripping, a burning smell or warm box, and no room for new circuits. An inspection will confirm.

How much does a meter box upgrade cost?

It depends on the scope, from replacing fuses with breakers, to a full switchboard upgrade, to relocating the box. We give an upfront fixed price including the compliance certificate.

What is the difference between a meter box and a switchboard?

The meter box houses your electricity meter and main switch, and usually the switchboard with your fuses, breakers and safety switches. Upgrades often involve both.

How long does the upgrade take?

A switchboard upgrade is usually a few hours. Relocating or rebuilding the meter box takes longer. We give you a timeframe when we quote.

Do I need an upgrade to add solar or an EV charger?

Often yes, as older boards lack the capacity or safety switches required. We will confirm what your new load needs.

Is meter box work a DIY job?

No. It is dangerous, licensed electrical work that must be done by a licensed electrician who issues a compliance certificate.

Will my power be off during the upgrade?

Power is off only while we work on the board, usually part of a day. We plan the job to minimise disruption.

Do you offer same-day service?

Yes. For urgent faults we can usually attend the same day across Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
